Monthly Luncheon with Asm. Ash Kalra

We invite you to join us for our monthly luncheon featuring a conversation with Ash Kalra. Ash is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing District 25, which includes the majority of San José. First elected to the Assembly 2016, he made history as the first Indian American to serve in the California Legislature after serving two terms on the San José City Council.

Ash began his career in the Santa Clara County Public Defender's Office, and that experience has shaped his efforts as a legislator. He currently serves as the Chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and as a member of several standing committees, including Housing and Community Development, Labor and Employment, Natural Resources, and Utilities and Energy.

Ash has been a vocal champion of CalCare (AB 2200), a proposed single-payer healthcare system in California. He authored the California Racial Justice Act of 2020 (AB 2542) and its 2022 retroactive expansion (AB 256) to address racial bias in criminal sentencing, as well as AB 268 in 2025 to designate Diwali as an official state holiday. He was also a leading proponent of AB 1157 (the Affordable Rent Act) to lower rent increase caps and legislation to streamline affordable housing project approvals.
