Lunch with Prof. Chad Raphael
A scholar of political and environmental communication, Chad Raphael is a Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Santa Clara University. Prof. Raphael will join us to discuss the challenges of vetting candidates and holding elected officials accountable when disinvestment in local journalism has diminished the news media's traditional role as the "4th Estate" in our democracy.
George Santos' ability to escape scrutiny throughout a successful Congressional election is just a highly visible symptom of an illness stemming from the loss of local newspapers and the corresponding realignment of local politics with national partisanship – fueled by national partisan media and independent expenditures.
Prof. Raphael will give his take take on the decline of local news and a number of steps that might fill this void.
